How to get news coverage of your organization

University of Richmond’s Jepson School of Leadership Studies and Society of Professional Journalists, Virginia Pro Chapter, will present Meet the Media Day 2013: How Non-Profit and Community Organizations Can Obtain News Coverage on Sept. 14 at the Jepson School.
Three panel discussions will feature editors and reporters representing newspapers, radio-TV news and specialty publications speaking and taking questions about how to get coverage of an organization’s news and events.
The newspaper panelists will include: Greg Gilligan, Richmond Times-Dispatch business editor; Jason Roop, Style Weekly editor; Tom Lappas, Henrico Citizen editor; Greg Pearson, publisher, The Chesterfield Observer and Chesterfield Monthly; and Pat Kane, Progress-Index (Petersburg) multimedia editor.
Radio-TV panelists will include: Wayne Farrar, WCVE Public Radio news director; and A.J. Lagoe, WRIC-TV (ABC 8) reporter; and Nancy Kent, NBC 12 news director.
The specialty publications panel will feature: Kevin Clay, GayRAV.com editor; Ray McAllister Boomer Life Magazine editor; Robert Powell, Virginia Business magazine editor; Susan Winiecki, Richmond Magazine editor; and Christie Newman, Richmond.com site manager.
Additional panelists in all three categories will be announced. Sandra Peart, dean of the Jepson School, will welcome participants.
The workshop opens with coffee and tea at 8:15 a.m., followed by the newspaper session at 9 a.m., the radio-TV session at 10:45 a.m., and the specialty publications session at 1:30 p.m. Registration fee is $50 for one session; or $100 for all three plus buffet lunch at the university’s award-winning Heilman Dining Center. Upon entering the campus on Gateway Rd., proceed straight. Just past the first building on the right (Robins School of Business), turn right onto Ryland Circle.
There will be a large parking area on the left—turn left into the second bay, all of which is reserved for visitors—and park there.
Walk back up to Ryland Circle and turn left. Jepson Hall will be the building directly ahead in the quadrangle. Enter the bulding and turn right to reach Jepson 118.
